2021-04-04 · Guy de Chauliac, Italian Guido de Cauliaco, (born c. 1300, Chauliac, Auvergne, France—died July 25, 1368, Avignon), the most eminent surgeon of the European Middle Ages, whose Chirurgia magna (1363) was a standard work on surgery until at least the 17th century.
Many of his colleagues avoided contact with patients for fear of becoming infected. Guy, in contrast, looked after his patients, including Pope Clement VI who sat surrounded by burning fires. Guy de Chauliac (c1300-1368) trained in Toulouse and the University of Montpellier from where he achieved the highest possible degree of Master of medicine. The French surgeon Guy de Chauliac (ca. 1295-1368), also known as Guido de Cauliaco, was the most famous surgical writer of the Middle Ages. His major work remained the principal didactic text on surgery until the 18th century. Guy de Chauliac was born, very likely, at Chauliac, a village near the southern border of Auvergne. Guy de Chauliac was a popular surgeon of the Early Medieval Period.

Guy was born in the village of Chauliac, on the frontier of Auvergne, and died in Lyon. The years immediately preceding were spent in the papal city of Avignon, where he served Popes Clement VI, Innocent VI, and Urban V. Guy's family was poor, but, under the protection and with the support of the Church (the only course that was open in his day for training in anatomy and medicine), he Guy de Chauliac (c. 1290-1368) was not just any surgeon. He studied medicine in Toulouse, Montpellier and Bologna and it was in Bologna that he immersed himself in human anatomy. After completing his studies he worked as doctor medicinae in Paris and could call himself the personal surgeon of at least three popes in Avignon: Clement VI, Innocent VI and Urban V. The Montpellier ALS center is included in the Department of Neurology of the University Hospital Gui de Chauliac, and is headed by Prof.
